Let me start off by prefacing that I bought the HVR-MRC1K for my Canon XH-A1, so the logistics of this review might pale in comparison to someone using the device with an actual Sony Camcorder. I did various research on how to change my Canon into a tapeless system. After much debate and other stellar reviews of people who have used this device with their Canon equipment, I decided to purchase it.

The device itself is very solid. The buttons are well laid out and understandable, and the menu is very easy to navigate around. When the device is hooked up to my Canon, I select the "System Setup" menu feature in my XH-A1 and then select the DV Control and switch it from off to on. This is a great feature because it allows me the ability to press record on my canon and simultaneously have the HVR-MRC1K record as well.

The system records HDV video in .M2T files. Your XH-A1 can be set to 60i, 30F, or 24F. They will all work. The HVR-MRC1K's system is based off of FAT format so if your clips are longer than 21mins it will split them in 4gb sections. These can be edited natively in Adobe Premiere Pro. However, if you want to edit in FInal Cut Pro 7 you will need to download a plug-in from the Sony website for transcoding. If you are using Final Cut Pro X, you will need to download a program like Clip Wrap to take each 4gb clip and combined them seamlessly if the clips are longer than 21mins.

The biggest flaw that I've discovered so far with this device when pairing it with the XH-A1, is that the HVR-MRC1K consistently thinks that it is being hooked up to a computer and not a camcorder. This makes the device utterly useless and a real pain when you're trying to hurry and shoot something. There have been many tutorials online on how to cope with this. However, for me this technique does not work 100% of the time, and when you're on a schedule and need to shoot something immediately having the HVR-MRC1K think the camera is a computer is a huge pain. It would be wonderful if Sony would release some sort of firmware update that would address this issue. But that wouldn't make much sense because it is not meant to be synced with a Canon camera.

Overall, I like the Sony HVR-MRC1K Memory Recording Unit. Now if I can only find a way to make it stop thinking my XH-A1 is a computer.

If they aren't already connected, tether the units with the Firewire cable
Power off both units and disconnect the Firewire from the MRC1K
Eject the CF card and reinsert (This is the key step)
Power up the MRC1K
Insert the Firewire cable into the MRC1K
Power on the A1

You may find that the disconnect and reconnect of the Firewire cable is unneeded. My experience was that the failure would not occur after that until I stopped using the rig for 30 minutes with the two units connected but unpowered.
