KG’s Westside Café is only a 20minute walk from where I live, and is a very popular spot for breakfast. I was there a few months ago for just that reason and noticed they had a Reuben Sandwich on their menu. As I did not have my camera with me and was there for breakfast anyway, I decided to come back another time- this review is that other time.
The $8.99 Reuben is served with a pickle slice and a couple of sides for options- I chose the fries, and they were quite plentiful. I went to eat one ½ of the sandwich, but it did not split apart as the top piece of corned beef required some further cutting. The corned beef was sliced on the thicker side, but was fairly tender with a good taste. There was a reasonable amount of corned beef for a sandwich of this price. It was set between slices of swiss cheese on the top and bottom of the rye bread. The rye bread was lightly toasted- almost to perfection- though there were a few places that were just slightly burned. KG’s uses Thousand Island dressing for their sauce, and the amount they used and its flavor worked pretty well. They could have used just a tad more sauerkraut, but the Reuben was moist and tasty. The sandwich was served hot and stayed hot until the last bite- this one was definitely the warmest of all I had tasted. The fries were very good and the pickle was average. When all is said and done it was a pretty good rendition of a Reuben and I would recommend it and give it a grade of an A-.
