Gentle Ben’s has been serving food and spirits since I have been in Tucson, which is >40years, though the ownership may have changed along the way. Their “Reuben on Rye” caught my eye, and so here we are. The $12 sandwich does come with a choice of a few sides, in my case the beer battered fries, which were a $1 upgrade from the normal fries. It was not served with a pickle. It is usually a good sign when cheese is left dripping against your cheek from your first few bites. The corned beef is cooked in some sort of beer for flavor and tenderness, and it was lean and tender and did have a bit different taste- not sure one way or another on it- a good excuse for another visit. The ryebread had a slight crispness to it and the crust was perfect- my mouth did not have to work extra breaking down the crust. My only complaint would be that it did not have much of a ryebread flavor to it, but it’s “texture” was one of the best I have had. The thousand island sauce they used was pretty indescript flavor-wise, but there was enough of it since the sandwich seemed to be dripping a lot. There was not a lot of sauerkraut, but its taste was fine. The same could be said of the corned beef- not a lot of it either, particularly for that price. The beer battered fries were very good, as was the Mocha Java Stout sitting in the background. Overall, it was a decent tasting Reuben and deserves a solid “B”.
