Chimney & Thunderdome, North West Point

The Chimney is named after a small hole in the coral, but the part of the site that really interested me was the Thunderdome.

The metal structure was built for a French reality TV show in the early 90s. Contestants free-dived (i.e. take a breath, hold it, and dive down under the water) through a hole in the top of the hemisphere to search for "pearls" which they could exchange for food once the game was over. They could also give the pearls to women dressed as mermaids, who would give them a breath of compressed air from scuba apparatus to allow them longer underwater.

Great idea, hey? Er...actually, NO! As anyone who knows anything about diving (or physics) can tell you, air (or any gas) compresses as you descend under the surface due to the pressure exerted by the water, and consequently expands again as you ascend. This is why the golden rule of scuba is to never hold your breath - just imagine a balloon filled with compressed air under water, that is tied off & sent to the surface...it will get bigger and bigger until it bursts...and this is what can happen to your lungs were you to take a breath of compressed air, hold it, and ascend to the surface. Needless to say - after some serious injuries - the idea was axed.

The frame collapsed after being damaged by a hurricane, and is now a cool collection of twisted metal which provides shelter for schools of fish. It's a great site, and I was lucky enough to dive here three times. On the second occasion I got to hang out at the dome for most of the time, snapping away as happy as a sandboy.

Your underwater shots are amazing!! I just tried it for the first time on holiday, snorkeling, but was instantly hooked!! Just have to learn how to SCUBA dive now...
