Bucktown - 17th Street Canal on Lake side of break

Bucktown in Metairie

Just two blocks south on this Canal is utter devastation where the levee break flooded the area of Lakeview, mid city and eventually downtown New Orleans the day after Katrina. The floodwall across the Canal in this photo is the one that broke farther down the Canal. Studies now show that it was built on poor soil by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

All the flood defences seem to have been 'done on the cheap', hoping that nothing would ever happen.
