Mississippi Rising - March 14, 2011

Bonnet Carre' Spillway

The River has overflowed its banks and is up to the structure of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway locks.
In the coming days as snow and ice melt in the tributaries in the northern parts of the United States the River will rise even higher.
The gauge was at 16 feet. When the Spillway was last opened in April 2008, the gauge was at 22 feet.

Wow, with all of the water that will be coming downriver, it will surely be opened. Maybe even Morganza too.

I think I recognize some of that water . . . melted out of my front yard.

And the Federal Flood Insurance program is 18 billion in the hole.

There's still a lot of snow here and we're sending all down your way!

Too bad all this fresh water isn't flowing through the swamp, where it would do some good, instead of just pouring into the gulf. Nice dramatic sky
Cindi Smith15-Mar-2011 03:57
Yep, lots of snow and rain flowing south. I love that sky!

Wow, looks like I was just there recently and it was all dry in the front of the locks . . . but I did notice the ships sticking out high above the levee as they passed by lately.

Amazing size and power of your mighty mississip!!!

We wish you all the luck this year Coleen, we were given flood warnings a few weeks ago and since then the river has fallen. It's at 7.4 feet tonight and flood stage is 15 feet! Sure hope those aren't rain clouds.

A sure sign of spring. Great sky and love the ships!

Great shot and an angry looking sky.
