Chatterton, 1856

Henry Wallis, 1830-1916

"A poor young poet, Thomas Chatterton,
faked medieval histories and poems to get
by, but was exposed as a fraud. Penniless,
he took his own life by drinking arsenic.

Wallis's picture of a teenage suicide
was a popular sensation when it was first
exhibited and toured the British Isles." Tate Britain
