Scene from 'Twelfth Night' ('Malvolio and the Countess'), exhibited 1840

Daniel Maclise, 1806-1870

"The painting shows an incident from
Shakespeare's play, A steward, Malvolio,
is tricked into believing that his employer,
the Countess Olivia, loves him. A forged
letter in her name persuades him that she
admires his ridiculous yellow stockings,
and his swaggering familiarity results in
his being imprisoned." Tate Britain
