The Ricoh GR Digital Diary

The Ricoh GR Digital is a fun to use 8 megapixel camera
with some great strengths, and some glaring faults, deceptively disguised
as a point and shoot. The camera is built around the superb 28mm f/2.4 GR lens,
but has a very noisy sensor. The noise, however, is very film-like in its 'grain'
and lends itself superbly to digital black & white work of the old school flavor.

Great tribute to the little Ricoh... Maybe I should try converting some of my high iso Casio shots to B&W and see if it improves them, but I'm sure they don't match the B&W film look you're getting from the GR. +++V

update: i am still drooling at this GR camera. then costco had a $50 rebate on the Lumix DMC-FZ7. just the word Leica and the Elmarit Lens got me. So that is my current street shooter for now. I keep hearing good things about the GR. Wish I could borrow one to give it a spin.

Leland, it's a great camera, but dynamic range is pretty limited, remember it's got a tiny 1/1.8 sized sensor. But depending on how you work it, you can get some great detail going. Take a look at the 'A-Train' shot, and you can see some good shadow, and highlight details. It was very sunny, but the whites on the train are not blown out, and there's nice shadow detail under the rails. It's a great camera for photojournalism/Cartier-Bresson type images. hey sam...i'm really interested in this camera...how's the dynamic range in this??? i noticed your samples, the detail in the shadow is pretty mashed up or non existent. is it because of the camera? or because your adjust the tones afterwards? or because when you reduced the resolution to post???
