But is film on its last stand? Well, the end of film
has been predicted for years now, but she's still here.

Even though I started out on film, I do love technology
very much. I was once a videophille as well, and was a big
fan of the laserdisc (anyone remember?). When the dvd first
came out, I remember reading an enthusiast's magazine where
the editor wrote not to worry, that the laserdisc should be
around for another five years before the dvd took over.
Well, guess what? Laserdiscs were gone about a year and
a half after that. That's the march of technology.

What does this have to do with film? Well, unlike the laserdisc,
film hasn't quite died as early as some would have liked. Reason?
There must be something to it, in my opinion. Whether it's the
"film look" or a certain romanticism or nostaligia about shooting
film, it's still here.

So is film on its last stand? Eventually, it will have to go whether
we want it to or not. I've already spoken to a few places where I develop
my film, and they all tell me that when their film developing machines
break down beyond economical repair, they will neither fix nor replace them.
But right now, and if you go by the enthusiasts here on Pbase, and the
thousands more on sites like Flickr, film is still going strong. It's become
a cult, it's become as I said, the New Niche.
