Film: First, Last...Everything (A Commentary)

Zoe takes her first stand, and it's captured on film.
But is film on its last stand? Well, the end of film
has been predicted for years now, but she's still here.

Even though I started out on film, I do love technology
very much. I was once a videophille as well, and was a big
fan of the laserdisc (anyone remember?). When the dvd first
came out, I remember reading an enthusiast's magazine where
the editor wrote not to worry, that the laserdisc should be
around for another five years before the dvd took over.
Well, guess what? Laserdiscs were gone about a year and
a half after that. That's the march of technology.

What does this have to do with film? Well, unlike the laserdisc,
film hasn't quite died as early as some would have liked. Reason?
There must be something to it, in my opinion. Whether it's the
"film look" or a certain romanticism or nostaligia about shooting
film, it's still here.

So is film on its last stand? Eventually, it will have to go whether
we want it to or not. I've already spoken to a few places where I develop
my film, and they all tell me that when their film developing machines
break down beyond economical repair, they will neither fix nor replace them.
But right now, and if you go by the enthusiasts here on Pbase, and the
thousands more on sites like Flickr, film is still going strong. It's become
a cult, it's become as I said, the New Niche.

"Magnifique" comment SAM.Extra sitution for the photographer all is possible ,we are near of unlimited time...but when I lokk a picture of 1900 of the Brothers LUMIERE ,I stay as a little boy ,very humble...There are some hoice to do ,but I can not...one time simple, one time only DSLR,one time videomovie,...At the end only our emotion adds a value and the most to do to give an another person this same emotion.

Great capture of Zoe's first steps, and surely film is for connoissuers, and if it is used by less people, that will render it even more popular. V

Precious portrait!! ...I still love film, though it is getting hard to find places to process it! I'd hoped it wouldn't disappear in my lifetime!??!!

Phenomenal image of Zoe. Your portrait skills are outstanding. Talented really. BV
Film remains everything. Long live film!!! As for those of you who do not shoot in
film, what are you waiting for? Once its gone you never will? :)))

A purely digital world is a sad world in my view.

Whoops. I meant to refer to James Clarke, not Colin. Sorry about that James.

Beautiful capture!!
I like what you have said about film. I think it does have a lot of life left in it. Even though I definitely enjoy the convenience and some of the advantages of digital, there is something special about film. I think Colin put it very well as well when he brought up the simplicity of film. I think that is part of the appeal for me. There are fewer distractions and even though I can't take as many pictures with film, the ration of relatively good shots to bad is much better than with digital. I also find myself drawn to film images or sometimes digital images that look like film. I think the fact that it is a "new niche" leaves it open to a lot of the best photographers out there and even though there are many many excellent photographers that shoot digital, there are a lot of film enthusiasts who really wow me with their work. So anyway, that's my 2 cents! :)

priceless bro...purely priceless...that Noritar is spectacular and really brings Zoe's beauty front and center from of a smoothly out of focus background. This will be one of your most treasured photos. V... (incidentally, a pithy and engaging account of the possible future of film by the eloquent Sammy-X!)

Very cute shot of the lovely Zoe making her first stand. +V

I think it has something to with simplicity, even the simplest digital camera is way more complicated than a film point and shoot. My little Canon Prima is perfect example of simplicity the only thing to press is the shutter, and maybe the auto flash override buttons. Then then there's magic of getting the photos back after development. I find with a digital I miss stuff because I keep checking over the shots, where as with film I can't check so I just keep on shooting.
...and maybe Laserdisc has gone (they were never very popular in Australia for some reason), but I have friends that are still using VHS because it's is as easy as popping the tape in and pressing play, whereas DVD in the words of one of my friends "has all these complicated menu BS and too many buttons".
