My late Father, Charlie Pike, did the testing and evaluation of one of the first (possibly the first) prototype TL5H shovels, in about 1971, at the Weyco Vail camp. It was a love-hate relationship. He could see the future of hydraulic shovels, and welcomed it, but that machine was a maintenance nightmare. Especially hydraulic lines. Ran off a 6V-71 Detroit, and you could hear it a mile away. Humble beginnings for the shape of things to come.
