February 25: Barrel Cactus

Rancho Bernardo, CA

Most of you who have not been to San Diego probably think it is green and lush. While that is true, it is the result of irrigation. We really live in an arid climate (less than 10 inches of precipitation a year). Many of my neighbors have Xeriscaped yards. This barrel cactus is just a few doors down from my place.

Looks so warm and friendly. I think this would be excellent in b&w.

These cacti make for great contrast images. The sharp spines with rounded shape. Very nicely done.

The picture moves from side ot side when scrolling--way too cool, esp since I haven't had anything to drink tonight :)

I was looking at one of these in NM and thinking how painful it would be to fall on it. Looks even more painful close up. Nice shot Robin.

very cool. And I learned a new word. Do you also have that really course grass like they have in florida?

Very nice design, Robin! I assume if a person were to have a fall, he/she would probably remember it for the rest of their lives..:)

I've been bit by those a time or two. We don't have them in Illinois. Nice healthy Barrel; you did it proud.

Wonderful light and shadows.
This makes a great refuge for small insects to hide from their predators.
Wouldn't it be nice if we all had cacti to hide in.
