February 11: Looking Out

Rancho Bernardo, CA

I’m not real wild about my current self-challenge. I’m finding it difficult to find dual points of equal interest in one frame. Then there is the problem of focus and depth of field. Any how, I found these two guys were sunning on my dusty table top this morning.

Canon EOS 5D ,Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
1/400s f/4.0 at 195.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Very visually appealing image.

I think this is a good exercise, Robin. Any exercise is good. I'm thinking I am going to mount the 400mm and shoot nothing else for a month. I've got to do something. I like the sparkle in this. Did you add it?

Beautiful subjects and nice lighting.

Robin, have you told your therapist about these challenges? (j/k!)

This one has got to be harder than the last one, but as long as you're learning something and having fun, well, that's what it's all about!

What's the next challenge?

LOL! I am laughing at your comment... your self challenge is one which most photographers seek to avoid as far as I understand it. I am certainly far from a professional photographer, but I seem to recall hearing that competing focal points is not a good thing. The trick then if you really want two subjects, is to make the two subjects one focal point. This photo here comes pretty close to that I think. I am loving the light.

I think your challenge is producing some great work, but admittedly 2 is not an easy number to accomodate composition-wise.

Like others I like the flare on the tail of the emu (?).

Your challenge is for you to compete with yourself. Be happy. I like these little creatures. I believe I see you in this.

You are doing fine in this challenge.
You have not had to resort to shooting salt and pepper shakers, yet.

Aussie keepsakes keeping each other company, I recognize them & the dust bunnies too as I have the latter to look at as well :>) !! Gosh it's almost a year isn't it !! I like your comp & your challenge.

These are great, Robin. I love the sparkle that radiates from the stainless one.

I think you have done a fine job finding these two Robin. They do look nice together.

I love the little flare on the tail end of the far object.

Your challenge is a challenge specifically for those reasons, and the reason I'm watching carefully how you handle the focus of dof. Does the 5D have an A-Dep mode? Haven't tried it on the 20D but I wonder if it would work in situations that are challenging like this.

hmm . . . you DO have a knack for driving yourself nuts . . .I think I see you in the reflection . . .does that mean there is a tryptyc of interest???
Pepe Zyman12-Feb-2006 01:06
You found more than two point of interest on this one. Look at the reflection.
