August 22: Heading Out

Colorado Springs, CO

It is time to saddle up and leave!

This is a statue of General William Jackson Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs. I'm turning the city back over to him and heading out.

The first leg is a trip to Minneapolis for 2 ½ days and then I fly back here to pick up my car and wend my way back to San Diego, route yet to be determined.

My nearly two-month stay here was full of time with family, visits to old haunts from my childhood days. It was great being here, and of course the big Padder tour of the best parts of Colorado was the absolute highlight. Seeing my sister and her family was also quite special.

So I leave with fond memories, new friends, and strengthened family ties.

When I was a teenager certain rowdy elements would adorn his horse's genitals with bright orange paint; or so I heard ;-). Since this edifice is right in front of my old High School, I'd guess it was trouble makers from there!

I debated whether to use the image above or the one with the "rear" view for today. Do you have a preference?

If you are curious, Palmer is one of the more interesting figures who helped to open the American West. He was quite an accomplished man. Here is more information on **General Palmer.**

is there a touch of guilt there?

@Petesie ... can't comment ... there is no statue (oops, I mean statute) of limitations in COS on ball painting! ;-). @ Coleen ... LOL.

Great angle/view and nicely taken shot. In other words, good comp.
I like this shot. The rear-end one is just too "nutty." hehe

I like the POV on this one.

Yes, the forward facing image is my choice and is grand...but I'm a bit worried, do I detect a possible confession concerning the "orange paint caper"?

I love the pewter effect here. Just because you're finishing your "vacation" is no reason to get on your high horse, Robin.

The front shot represents "I'm here" The back shot represents "I'm out of here"

On balance the rear shot is more interesting. This guy sounds like he deserves his place on the plinth but I get a bit tired of statues of dubious generals in England of which the main picture reminds me.

The statue has a nice smooth texture to it - unusual

It's been an interesting tour, Robin. Hope the rest of your travels are as good. I like the this with its deep blue background.

I agree with Breland, acording with your message I guess the rear view fits better!!

The forward facing shot is really attractive: great composition against the wonderfully blue sky. Concerning the rear shot, I am sorely tempted to indulge in a pun but this is a family site and, anyway, nuts are for squirrels.

I prefer the front facing shot. He's sitting tall and proud, ready to face the future. I will miss you terribly, Robin. Looking forward to SD! I love you!

I like the rear end shot because your message is that you are leaving the great state of Colorado. It was great meeting you on our trip and I'm sure we will stay in touch. Continue to enjoy yourself and have a safe trip.

PBase is a handy way to keep up-to-date on your whereabouts, Robin! Hope you have an easy flight, that NWA hangs in there for you. I prefer this shot to the other - it's more grand, suitable for such a pioneering subject.
