Okay, how many of you have ever heard of Will Rogers, please raise your hands? Aha, just as I thought --- most of you! Now how many of you know there is a Shrine to him on the side of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs? Raise your hands again! Yup, just as I suspected, very few of you.
To further inform you, I visited the **Shrine ** this morning and this is a picture of it. However Will Rogers is not buried there, Spencer Penrose and his wife (the creator of the Shrine to his friend Will) are entombed in the chapel
If you want to visit Will's birthplace and burial site you have drive 700 miles east to Claremore, OK. For what's its worth Claremore was the location of the musical "Oklahoma" and it is bisected by Route 66 (where you can still get your kicks!)
The Shrine, dedicated by Penrose about 3 months after my birth in 1937, is located 8,134 feet (2468 m.) up the side of Cheyenne Mountain and thus about 2000 feet (610 m.) above Colorado Springs. Most folks know about Cheyenne Mountain because the North American Air Defense Command is carved into the side of the solid granite mountain.
Enough of all this. Do be sure to **click here** to see a long view of the Cheyenne Mountain with the location of the Shrine identified with an arrow.
