June 9: “It Never Rains in Southern California”

Rancho Bernardo, CA

Did you know that Southern California is really a semi-arid desert? Do not let all the flowers, trees, and green lawns fool you. We should average only 10 ¼ inches per year, and for the past five years we have been in a severe drought.

Thanks to the Colorado River and the snow packs in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains we manage to pump enough liquid gold to stay green, keep over 100 golf courses in good shape, and distribute to all the agricultural pursuits and have plenty to drink.

My yard is not Xeriscaped, but I do have a proud Prickly Pear cactus (genus Opuntia) dominating my southern backyard fence. This tiny bloom was caught in the crosshairs of my new 200mm lens.

"Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl don't they warn ya
It pours, man it pours"
Albert Hammond

nice picture, GREAT song choice!

I am intrigued by all this talk of drought and dryng reservoirs giving up their secrets. I would love to see some images of these re-emerging towns as it is something that has fascinated me since the drought we had here in Scotland a few years back when reservoirs dried up and an old mining village was rediscovered in almost pristine condition at the bottom of a dried up reservoir (since filled up again - well, it is Scotland afterall!)

Nice picture. Opuntias are nice and have tasty fruits, but avoid to touch the small needles. It hurts and they are difficult to remove.

We are in a drought in Utah as well, although we've had some rain today. I hear Lake Powell is quite fun to explore right now with it down so low.
This is a beautiful image Robin!

When Lake Mead was filled it cosumed a small town, it has been underwater for over 50 years and now there is an anchor and buoy sitting in the middle of main street, and you can walk through the town, not a drop of water to be seen!

I think desal should at least be looked at....with all the global warming the oceans are rising a bit, therefore I think it can give up a bit...:)

Lake Hodges which is a city reservoir 1/2 mile from my home is below 50% and now instead of water we see trees.

Good point Doug. And my concern is like yours ... the wastefullness of it all.
There are serious efforts looking into desalinization of sea water here.

Nice shot!

but Robin don't forget about the severe draught in Colorado too! which means that Lakes Powell and Mead are both over half empty, which means that source is drying up! Here in Las Vegas, we have started on water restrictions and I don't think we can even put a lawn in the front yard anymore....but of couse we blame it all in the So Cal people that take all of it! ;-)

Thanks Russ. No, learning from your little "disaster" is why I approached this with a long lens, leather coat, hip boots, catcher's mask, and a stiff drink.
