June 6: Omaha Beach

In the fall of 2000 I took a 3 week D Day tour sponsored by American Heritage magazine. This image was taken on Omaha Beach. It is not a current photo, but seemed appropriate.

I am an American historian by training (I used to teach high school history), and my interest in World War II dates back to my boyhood days observing the war as a child from Denver. By the time I got to high school I began devouring everything I could find to read about the conflict and I watched every war film. Thus I was thrilled to be able to take this D Day tour which included the Allied planning in London, the Channel crossing, a visit to all five invasion beaches, the breakthrough at St. Lo, and the drive through Paris to the Battle of the Bulge and finally reaching the Rhine.

This tribute to D Day is an obvious choice for today, and I honor and mourn the 56 million people who died during the conflict between 1939 and 1945.

Interesting, great capture. I'm a history buff too of earlier periods but have a lot of catching up to do.

Fitting image. I'll be going through your trip link later. I got ahead of myself and now know the fate of Gen. T.Roosevelt, Jr. Oh well.

Yes Karen, it was quite blustry. Wind and rain... but not the same high seas. Pretty darn cold for early October.

Perfect Robin! Appears you had the same weather conditions as they did, 60 years ago.

How topical. My father was a Royal Air Force policeman during the war, based on our south coast and later in France. One of his missions was to go with the team that recovered AVM Leigh-Mallory's sensitive documents when his plane came down in the French Alps en route to India. My dad was given a cow bell by one of the local farmers which now hangs in my lounge.

Thanks for the image, Robin. Have you ever been to the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans? It is truly wonderful.
