Bear in Fish Creek near Hyder, AK

Stewart and Hyder are famous for the annual salmon run in the aptly named Fish Creek. This occurs in July-August and lures large numbers of both grizzly and black bears to come here to feast on the salmon. I watched the spectacle just 5 minutes out of Hyder on the Salmon Glacier Road. The creek itself was filled with wild salmon and bears were having a go at catching them literally a few meters below the road. I also saw bald eagles flying silently overhead a mere 10 meters above me.

After having stayed at Meziadin Lake I decided to visit the small towns of Stewart and Hyder which are accessible from the Stewart-Cassiar Highway via the 64 kilometres(40 miles) long Glacier Highway. This detour is well worth taking as it offers some spectacular views of several hanging glaciers and the impressive Bear Glacier which extends nearly all the way down to the road.
