They look alike and were sold in the same years. The XD5, the downgraded XD7 and the XG9, the upgraded XG2. The XD was better built, had a better shutter, offered more creative photographic solutions, a fully active lightmeter and could be (limited) operated without batteries. The XG had a nicer price tag and made it easier to shoot in A-modus. It fully depended on batteries. It was the XG9 that killed the XD5. Consumers didn't care for the goodies on the XD5. The photographers, not amateurs, that really wanted the best ended up with the legendary XD7.
