After 1989, the Czech air force was re-organised according to Nato standards. A lot of Soviet- built aircraft and helicopters were withdrawn from use. MiG-21's were upgraded to serve until the 21st century though. Because of the splitting of Czechoslovakia into an independant Czech and Slovak republic on January 1st, 1993, a lot of hardware was devided over the two air forces.
