To Tei Wan > Dragon’s Back > Big Wave Bay > Shek O (Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail )

Chosen as the Best Urban Hike in Asia by Time Magazine in 2004, Dragon’s Back is the most popular hike for tourists and expats due to its easy accessibility (20 minutes from the city’s downtown heart) and stunning vistas. Most visitors finish this exhilarating route with a swim at Shek O beach and a meal at an alfresco restaurant nearby.

The Dragon’s Back, located at Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail on the South Eastern coast of the Hong Kong Island, starts from To Tei Wan and ends at Big Wave Bay.

Walk up to Shek O Peak from the foot path beside To Tei Wan pavilion on Shek O Road. You will then reach the rugged undulating spinal ridge of the Dragon’s Back. From the ridge there are superb views eastwards to Clear Water Bay Peninsula and islands in the eastern sea approaches to Hong Kong. To the west, there are views of Stanley Peninsula and the South China Sea. At the foot of the Dragon’s Back is the popular village Shek O with its sandy beaches.

How to get there:

Take a taxi or Citybus no 9 from the bus terminus at exit A3 of Shau Kei Wan MTR Station and drop off at To Tei Wan bus stop on Shek O Road (???) . (20-mins)
Next to the bus stop you will see a well-marked path, information board and steps leading up to the Hong Kong Trail and Dragon’s Back.

Exit:

Take minibus from Big Wave Bay to Shau Kei Wan (holidays only) or
At Big Wave Bay, walk south along Big Wave Road for 15 minutes to Shek O Road and then get No.9 bus from Shek O to the urban areas.
