Sai Kung, Hong Kong

Sai Kung is a small fishing village with picturesque boats, beaches and mountain scenery. The fresh seafood is plentiful and there are many dining options and wine bars along the seaside promenade. A day at the beach here makes for a nice change of pace from Hong Kong.

Sai Kung can be reached by minibus routes 1 from Kowloon Bay MTR Station, 1A from Choi Hung MTR station, route 12 from Po Lam MTR Station or KMB bus route 92 from Diamond Hill MTR Station. People going via Tseung Kwan O can take minibus route 101 from Hang Hau MTR station or NWFB bus route 792M from Tiu Keng Leng MTR station. Sai Kung can also be reached by KMB bus routes 99 (from Wu Kai Sha Station) or 299 (from Sha Tin Central). It's admittedly a little far from the city, but that's the whole idea of it.

Sai Kung is not just about seafood although it is what you should not miss. Sai Kung's many islands set this place apart from the rest of HK and is best explored by boat. Spectacular hexagonal volcanic columns are the highlight of this boat tour. As most offshore islands in Sai Kung are remote, boat tour provides the best way for visitors to appreciate their scenic beauty. In addition, one can see the diverse morphology of sea caves, sea stacks and sea arches, as well as depositional landforms such as beaches and tombolos.

Visitors can undertake the boat tours by hiring ferries at Sai Kung Pier which my friends and I did on this occasion. To explore the Sai Kung Vistas sufficiently will surely take more than one visit. I am already looking forward to the next outing. Accessibility to certain islands will depend on weather condition and wind direction which in turn are determined by the seasons and can be problematic. To help you plan your outing, it is best to consult the weather channel at http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm.
