In 1893, Miss Agnes Joaquim brought a new orchid, a hybrid between Vanda hookerana and Vanda teres, to the attention of Henry Nicholas Ridley,the Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Ridley confirmed that the flower was indeed unknown to science. The orchid was then named after her.
The orchid 'Vanda Miss Joaquim' was chosen as Singapore's national flower in 1981.
