East African Crowned Crane

Jurong Birdpark, Singapore

Scientific name: Balearica regulorum (Bennett, 1834). Also, called 'Grey Crowned Crane'. Status: Cites Appendix II.

Distribution and habitat: These cranes a found from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Kenya to central Tanzania. Largest concentrations are found in marshes and grassy
flatlands near the rivers and lakes; also inhabits cultivated land.

flourished in the Eocene (54-38 million years ago). Their diet is plants, seeds, grain, insects, frogs, worms, snakes, small fish and the eggs of water animals. They stamp
their feet as they walk, flushing insects to eat.
