Originally flat roofed, providing a gun emplacement, this was replaced in the mid 18th century when the top floor was rebuilt. The roof was rebuilt again in 1886-7, by architect Hippolyte Blanc, in 14th century style. Blanc was also responsible for the restoration of The Great Hall.
