Mons Meg

Scotland

Weighing in at over 6 tons (6,040kg) and firing stones weighing 330lbs (150kg), this massive gun was made at Mons in present day Belgium. Presented, along with another, to James II
in 1457, by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgandy. It was used against the English soon after and was also taken, at a speed of 3 miles per day, to the siege of Norham Castle on the River Tweed.

By the mid-16th century it was restricted to ceremonial use, firing salutes from the castle ramparts. When fired to mark the marriage of the infant Queen Mary in 1558, the stone
was recovered from almost 2 miles away. It was last fired on 14 October 1681 when the barrel burst, fracturing two of the hoops.
