Carabela la Pinta
This is a replica of the Pinta which was one of the three ships that Christopher Columbus used
on his voyage to the "New World" in 1492. I was excited to walk through the ship because my
hometown of Columbus, Ohio has a replica of the Santa Maria. Now if I can find a replica of
the Nina I will be able to complete my visit to Columbus's ships.
The visit to the Pinta turned out to be more thought provoking than expected. On board the ship
there are mannequins dressed to look like the native Americans that Columbus would have taken
back with him to Spain. Since members of our group were from the United States including
Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Colombia, Poland, and Bulgaria not
everyone looked on this visit and the ships use of the mannequins in the same way. Some
students did not seem to like this representation of their ancestors. It made me stop to think
about Columbus's voyage in a different way.
