JPG CS Macro Frost Flower PA154541.jpg

"Frost Flowers" are formed when certain long-stemmed weedy plants freeze, with moisture still in the stalks. As the plant freezes, the stalk splits and the frozen moisture is extruded through the vertical cracks in thin, ribbon-like sheets which then curl around the plant, forming the 'flowers'.

This was among several seen on a cold, frosty morning in Cades Cove.

Richard, thanks for the comments on my frost flowers. This indeed was the first time I had seen them. The ones you show here are much higher than the ones I saw. It shows that there is variety in frost flowers so hopefully I will see more different types in the future.

Excellent macro with excellent light and contrast. The quality really shines through. v
