Despite being rather in agreement with you about the randomness of the plastic, I think it works pretty well in this sort of picture -- more so than a smooth surface does. For vegetables and chess boards, the round ball beats all. but for people, a "philosophical" element is added when you see reality, and then a distortion of the reality.
