Mosques & Palaces

The main building types of classical Iranian architecture are Mosques and Palaces.
The architecture makes use of abundant symbolic geometry, using pure forms such as circles and squares.
Plans are based on often symmetrical layouts featuring rectangular courtyards and halls.

Post-Islamic architecture of Iran draws ideas from its pre-Islamic predecessor, and has geometrical and repetiitve forms,
as well as surfaces that are richly decorated with glazed tiles, carved stucco, patterned brickwork,
floral motifs, and calligraphy.

Mosques in Iran are truely fascinating both in terms of historical and artisitic values and
we have visited no fewer than 4 great mosques during our visit in Nasirol-Molk Mosque,
Friday Mosque, Imam Mosque and Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque which appear so similar in architectural style
yet so different individually in terms of history and character.

(1) Nasirol Molk Mosque, Shiraz - Nasirol Molk, who was one of the elites of Shiraz, is the founder of this mosque.
This mosque is unique for its tile work and architecture.
The construction work of mosque began in 1293 and was finally terminated in 1305.

(2) Abbasi Jame' Mosque (Imam Mosque), Esfahan - located to the south of the historical Imam square of Esfahan.
One of the interesting features of this mosque is the echo of sound in the center of the gigantic dome at 52m.
The huge one-piece marble and other slabs of stone, besides the intricate tile work and adornments prove extremely spectacular.

(3) Sheikh Lotf Ol-lah Mosque,Esfahan - constructed by a decree issued by Shah Abbas I and took a period of 18 years to complete.
The mosque is outstanding in respect of its tile work and other pieces of art.
This mosque was constructed in honor of Sheikh Lotf Ol-lah who was one of the important personalities
in the Shiite sect, in what is known as Lebanon today.
