Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

I can't believe how many Red Admirals were out today! There were Red Admirals in my yard, my neighbors' yards, in the park, in the fields, along the roads, everywhere! Add the total number of individuals I saw on my walk this afternoon to those I saw on my bike ride this morning, along the roads and everywhere else, and I have seen 60+ Red Admirals today. Add in reports from other observers in the area and we have hundreds of Red Admirals seen today! I don't think I have ever observed a flight of butterflies like this by any species before. This may be a date to remember!

All of the Red Admirals I saw except for this one didn't stop or land. They all appeared to be going in a northeast direction. This particular Red Admiral repeatedly landed on the bushes and dandelions in front of me, allowing me to get this and a number of other photos.

Do you remember a few years ago when there were quite a few around. It got to the point where one said "ho hum, another red admiral"! Wonder if this will be another good year for them? Hope so. You saw an amazing number. Wow! The lighting in this photo is glorious, Couldn't be better.

Beautifully captured Chris. I haven't seen any in my yard yet.
