Another great day of spring action! Late yesterday I went out for a walk about my neighborhood and along the way I saw my first Eastern Bluebird of the year, a male, and my first record of that species in my area. Then this morning out in the forest I heard my first singing Ovenbird of the year. His song joined the zee-zee-zee-zoo-zee of a Black-throated Green Warbler and the trilling of a Pine Warbler. Later on I biked along a path through scrubland where I heard numerous Yellow Warblers. Following that I biked past a farm where I saw a rooster displaying and cock-a-doodle-dooing to a harem of hens.
The biggest surprise of the day was the number of Red Admiral butterflies out. Today I saw at least 30 of them at widespread locations along a 5 km stretch of trail. This species is migratory and has a population in our area that varies in number from year to year. Last year was a terrible year for this species: I saw only one. This year in one hour I saw at least 29 more than I did all of last year!
