On September 30th 2006, this immature Purple Gallinule was discovered in a retention pond near a housing developement just north of the town of Macungie, Lehigh County, PA by Lee Levengood. Although it has been seen previously in Pennsylvania, it is a Lehigh County record.
It was last seen on October 12th, 2006.
The Purple Gallinule is a member of the Rallidae family and is usually found along the coasts of the Southeastern United States inhabiting marshy wetlands where they feed on plants and small animals. Perhaps this retention pond looked like home for this immature bird gone astray.
