Darners (Family Aeshnidae)

These are relatively large dragonflies, with many species dominating the latter half of the dragonfly season from mid-summer to early-mid autumn. Most are near-constant flyers, especially in evening feeding "swarms," but they often can be found perched vertically on branches or grasses in the early morning sun. By far the best ID feature is the shape of the two thoracic side stripes, but clasper shape/type in males, presence/absence of a black crossline on the face, and other miscellaneous features are also helpful. I was fortunate to get photos of every species I saw with exception of Fawn Darner.
