Bergen

Ah, Bergen — a beautiful, historic city on the west coast of Norway, nestled between the mountains and the sea. Known as the “Gateway to the Fjords,” it’s Norway’s second-largest city and has been a major trading hub since the Middle Ages. Founded around 1070 by King Olaf III, it quickly grew into an important center for commerce, especially during the era of the Hanseatic League, when German merchants dominated the city’s trade in fish and grain. Today, its colorful wooden houses along Bryggen Wharf — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are reminders of that bustling past, and they attract countless visitors every year.

Beyond its history, the city is famous for its stunning natural surroundings. Seven mountains rise around it, making hiking a favorite pastime for locals and tourists alike. The climate is mild but very wet — Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, with over 88 inches of rain a year, which helps keep the surrounding forests and hills lush and green. The fish market downtown is another highlight, offering fresh seafood and a lively atmosphere. Even though it’s a modern city with universities, cultural events, and music festivals — it’s known for fostering artists like the composer Edvard Grieg — it still feels cozy and tied to its maritime traditions.
