When we backpacked the Grand Canyon in 2002 we learned about the California condors and I thought the story about them being brought back from the brink of extinction was interesting. At that time they were just starting to introduce condors back into northern Arizona and I never imagined I would see one. Fast forward four years and the condor numbers are up to 274 with several pairs living in the Grand Canyon. Not only do they live there, but they like to hang out at the South Rim where the action is, so they are easy to spot. The adults can have wingspans up to 9.5 feet. !!! It was hard to appreciate just how big they were when they were flying, but it really sunk in when we saw their shadows pass over people. Large, graceful birds in flight (up close and personal, not so much. they are pretty ugly).
