Witches' Hill

Juodkrantė, Lithuania

Witches' Hill is an outdoor sculpture park located on a forested sand dune. Begun in 1979, it has been expanded several times and now contains
about 80 wooden sculptures along a series of trails. The artists drew on a long tradition of woodcarving in Samogitia and on the
equally long tradition of Midsummer Night's Eve (Joninės) celebrations on the hill. Most of the figures are based on
Lithuanian legends or folk tales.

Very interesting photos. By the title of the top one I immediately thought of Night on Bald Mountain. Of course it doesn't apply. Great photos. V.

Nice series of images, Jay.
Have to say that the devil deserved to have his foot stepped on
in the last image....but then he had the last laugh too as it was
hollow.....hehe!

To answer Char's question, the devil has a hollow foot according to Lithuanian folklore. He failed the test!

Hi Jay,
These are wonderful shots and great information. The carvings are so detailed and beautifully done. I wonder why the woman has her foot on the devils, that's interesting. \/
