Pictured Rocks derives its name from the 15 miles of colorful sandstone cliffs northeast of Munising on the shore of Lake Superior.
The cliffs are up to 200 feet above lake level. They have been naturally sculptured into shallow caves, arches, and
formations that resemble castle turrets and human profiles.
Streaks on the face of the cliffs comes from the groundwater leaching out of the rock. With it comes iron (reds), manganese
(black-white), limonite (yellow-brown), copper (pinks-green), and other minerals. As the water dries, these minerals
leave streaks of color.
This photograph was taken from a boat touring Pictured Rocks which the Gerlachs arranged for us.
