From October 3 to October 9, 2010 I participated as part of a group of 20 people in a Fall Color Workshop in the Michigan Upper Peninsula run by John and Barbara Gerlach. The Gerlachs live in Idaho near Yellowstone Park. Participants came from all over the United States.

Prior to the workshop I had been to their amazing one day seminar on "How to Shoot Beautiful Nature Images" in Livonia, Michigan and had read their two books, "Digital Nature Photography: The Art and the Science" and "Digital Landscape Photography". The Gerlachs are currently working on their third book, "Digital Wildlife Photography", and it should be available in about a year.

The Workshop was 100% instruction in landscape photography from two of the best photographers in the world. Their website provides complete information on all of their workshops, seminars, and books as well as extremely informative articles: http://www.gerlachnaturephoto.com/ .

The photographs in this small gallery incorporate some of the techniques the Gerlachs emphasized in the workshop (especially back-button focusing, manual exposure, and using the RGB histogram channels correctly), as well as the specific advice I was given by Barbara and John. Unfortunately, I am solely responsible for all of the flaws in these images. :-)

Note that we rarely photographed past 10:30 A.M. or before 5 P.M. to avoid harsh lighting. Meetings and meals occurred between these hours.
