An antique 19th Century tsakli painting in mineral pigments depicting, within a red border and emerging from a rectangular 'treasure casket' (Sanskrit: nidhana petaka) which holds 'terma' or hidden treasures is a bright 'golden' mirror - symbolising the empty clarity of Buddha nature. As one of the prime symbols of Dzogchen it reflects the state of pure awareness; as a symbol of Mahamudra (the contemplative Buddhist tradition known for its simplicity) it reflects the Great Seal. The mirror is empty of appearances, pure and bright, and eternally unblemished. An offering saffron yellow silken ribbon is attached through a ring to its base, indicating its use in rituals of pacification. 2 lines of Tibetan text to the reverse. 10.1 x 13.4cm
