view over the 'Temple of Piety' and the water gardens

The 'temple' is in fact an elaborate folly, a garden feature popular in the eighteenth century, and was used as a summer-house.
It was completed in 1742 by the estate owner William Aislabie as a 'symbol of piety' in memory of his father.
