Solar prominences resemble flames along the limb of the sun, extending many tens of thousands of miles away from its surface. When they are seen in silhouette, they're called filaments. This one was stable for more than a week before lifting off the surface. I was fortunate to be monitoring the sun for 90 minutes during this event.
