Gallery Fifty Three: creating energy through tension

Tension is a form of energy, and it can have a profound effect on photographic meaning. There are several ways we can introduce tension into our imagery. The most important means of introducing tension is by carefully controlling the amount of negative space in our composition (the space we leave between our subjects, as well as between our subjects and the edge of the image). We can also increase tension by throwing spatial relationships out of balance, stopping a moment in time so an action is left uncompleted, or stressing a heightened sense of anticipation. Finally, we can create energy through tension by photographing the tension in certain gestures and expressions.

I begin this gallery with a group of images using various kinds of tension that I made in Vietnam at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. I hope to add additional examples of expressive tension from images made on future trips as well.

I present this gallery in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a detailed caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
