Air raid, Klamath Falls, Oregon, 2008

Many photographers would pass up a chance to shoot this World War II commemorative mural in Klamath Fall because the parking lot in front of it is always full of cars. I saw the cars as a benefit, not a hindrance. I positioned myself so that the huge painting of a bomber seems to be careening into the cars parked in the foreground. I chose a car with a color that would complement the bomber, and the metallic blue paint of this one worked perfectly. I also liked how the big red taillights add an energy that echoes the energy of the explosions in the background. This merging of art and reality creates an incongruous juxtaposition. This image tells us to be careful where we park.

Without the car parked in front of the mural, this image would be simply description, rather than expression.

This image makes me want to go and run for cover, as if i am watching the scene in real life" Even though the plane is clearly a painting, they way you have composed it, adding the car in the foreground with the tight crop, blurs out the line between reality and the real world.

Thanks, Tim, for noting the positive effect those words on the license plate frame have on this image. They also add geographic context to the image.

Jay Maisel says that if words appear in images they become vital. I love the words Cascade and Klamath Falls in this image because they echo the way the plane is cascading and falling over the car.
