Highly-iridescent wingscales on the underside of the left hindwing of a male birdwing butterfly, Ornithoptera urvilleanus (the noise-like speckles are reflections from internal wingscale structures). Notice the wing vein running towards bottom-right. The width of the field of view of this image is 4mm.
Equipment: OM 38mm f2.8 auto macro (stopped down to f5.6), OM/FourThirds lens adapter, OM 65-116mm zoom extension tube set at maximum length, Sony HVL-LRAM ringlight (this is not a flash unit), E-510 camera mounted on a copystand and set to 8 second anti-shake. Exposure time was a little over a second.
