Iridescent wingscales on the upperside of the left hindwing of a rare male Morpho absoloni butterfly. Notice the wing vein over on the left. The width of the field of view of this image is 3.3mm. This close-up image is probably the first to have been published for this particular species.
Equipment: OM 38mm f2.8 auto macro (stopped down to f5.6), OM/FourThirds lens adapter, OM 65-116mm zoom extension tube set at maximum length, Sony HVL-LRAM ringlight (this is not a flash unit), E-510 camera mounted on a copystand and set to 8 second anti-shake. Exposure time was a little over a second.
