Bath was first established by the Romans as a spa and resort under the name Aquae Sulis (the Waters of Sulis) in 43 AD. Water that drained from the Mendip Hills bubbles up through geothermal springs in Bath, a geological fact that led the Romans to establish the city. Bath is home to the only hot springs in the U.K. With a population of 84,000 the city today is a tourist and cultural destination.
