Advice for a newbie: After you get the camera, get a good post processing program and learn how to use it. You can make a lot of bad shots look good with simple cropping and brightness/contrast adjustments.

Advice for a newbie: Never be afraid to ask a question in the forum no matter how stupid it may seem. We’ve all been there. Get a good monopod and a decent ball head (preferably with quick release) to take anywhere. It makes a world of difference when shooting in low light or at long zoom. In my case I’m a leftie so it may be the other way round for you. Support the foot of the monopod with your right foot placed in front of you. The monopod should be at an angle of about 30 degrees. Push your right knee towards the monopod and balance it the other way by having a fairly tight grip around the camera with your left hand. If your camera has a fixed extending lens you’ll want to get a grip around the lens barrel with your thumb facing left. You’ll now have the second best support next to a tripod. Advice for a newbie: Compose your picture when you are taking the picture rather than trying to fix the picture later on the computer (ie, stop and think about the shot, don't just click the shutter). Eliminate red-eye, use external flash! Most of the rules used in traditional film photography still apply in the digital world.

Advice to Newbies: Know your camera. Understand every button and menu selection on it. If the manual doesn't help, then search the forum and ask the questions. Shoot every kind of subject imaginable under different conditions. Get a tripod and shoot your scenics in early morning and late evening. Advice for a newbie: Use a tripod... especially in low light. A tripod will make your photos much sharper. It also allows you to stand back and look at the composition...did I frame the shot the way I really wanted too? Am I chopping off part of the scene? It allows you to get the whole picture before hitting the button. (advice I got from "yp" and have taken to heart.)
