Advice for a newbie: Compose your picture when you are taking the picture rather than trying to fix the picture later on the computer (ie, stop and think about the shot, don't just click the shutter). Eliminate red-eye, use external flash! Most of the rules used in traditional film photography still apply in the digital world.
