When the bird flew it hid in a Pine tree and this was the only photo in which the bird was facing the photographer. Again this photo is enlarged and you can see the white lower belly of the bird and just barely the un-feathered shanks of the legs. At the time, through the camera lens the bird was thought to be facing away and the white was thought to be at the base of the tail. These photos prove the Harris's Hawk rightly earned the title of super sneak, as it was not seen well enough for an ID for another month after this encounter.
